1.1. Background of the Study
Language interpreting or interpretation is the intellectual natural process of facilitating oral and sign-language communication. Orally communication is applied when communicating verbally to the addressee. Interpreting deals with oral translation in which the delivering of the message is transmitted instantly after the utterances delivered by the speaker, in particular communication situation, to bridge participants gap in language between the addressor and the addressee and the rendering is delivered by the assistance of an interpreter as a mediator.
According to Interpreting and Translation Services NT ( 2009 ), Interpreters provide a clear channel of communication between you and your client. The interpreter is not to add or subtract to the communication, but to only interpret what is being said. The interpreter will maintain confidentiality and not disclose information received in the course of an assignment. The interpreter is not an advocate or a counselor and should not be asked to provide advice, an opinion, explanation or any other assistance, beyond an interpretation of the conversation
According to Pochhacker ( 2004), interpreting is a form translation in which a first and the final rendition in another language is produced on the basis of one time presentation of an utterance in a source language.
So, both written translation and interpreting are belonged to the field of translation studies. Both imply transferring a massage from one language into another, however the technique of delivery is different. Interpreters act this by transferring messages verbally from one language into another. The basic role of a translator is to transfer written material from one language into another. Generally, in formal the process of interpreting take places such as : Media, Court , Medical , and international Conference, but also performed in informal such as: sightseeing, tour, business and commercial negotiation
However, As the world tourist destinations Bali provides wide range of Bali hotels from budget to luxury. Holiday in Bali will be more exciting if all travel arrangement have been well prepared in advance. This small island features spectacular mountain views, rice terraces and long wide sandy beaches. Each holiday destination and tourist resort provides its own characteristic making it more attractive and impressive to travelers. Bali is famous with cultural , handicraft, Batik, silver and paintings, so many tourist both domestic and international tourists come to Bali for shopping.
In point of fact, tourist come to Bali, they prefer to explore Bali, and go for sightseeing. While they tour in Bali, a professional tour guide accompany them during on tour. When the tourist visit the place of interest in Bali, there are accessible a lot of souvenir shop on place of interest. At glace they do shopping in the shop and bargain to storekeeper. But unfortunaly, most of staff who work in the souvenir shop can’t speak English very well, and so when the tourist bargain on shopping tour or commercial negotiation, so an interpreter is required to mediate the gaps of the communication between those participants ( seller and buyer ). That is way the existence of the tour guide in this case as an interpreter is practically helps their guest and the sellers who can’t speak English in bargaining with the buyers.
